]]> Had an emergency phone call from a good client and friend that reminded me… now that winter is here, it’s a good time to think about power management and protection.

The recent winter storms here in Northern Ca. caused power outage and fluctuations in his home. This caused the power supply in one of his desktop machines to short out.

He is using a surge protector on his systems, but I’m recommending to him to go ahead and get a UPS which also has the ability to regulate the amount of power going through it to his systems.

Yes, UPS are expensive… but if he’d had one, he wouldn’t have had to pay for an emergency repair job yesterday. It’s one of those ‘ounce of prevention’ things.

]]> I’m stunned at how much this stuff has been affecting people lately. In the last few weeks I’ve run across several instances where malicious software disguised as anti-virus or anti-malware software is actually the software that is causing the problem. Planting trojans, making weird, questionable connections to the ‘net and throwing up fake messages about how your system is suddenly infected with thousands of virii, trojans and spyware files all of a sudden.

Oh, and they’re a pain to fully remove too.  I don’t understand how people can write such garbage for the sake of making a few bucks.

I hope you never have to deal with that stuff. Honestly.
